The BCD Solway Sharks ran out comfortable winners by four goals to one in their NIHL North D1 fixture on Saturday night at the Shark Tank.
However, it was to be the Sheffield-based side who were to open the scoring in the seventh minute when Scott Morris won a face-off to the right of the Sharks goal and Ben Jones rifled a shot past the unsighted Kieran Hobbins.
That lead was to last for just four minutes. Sutton had worked hard to kill a Solway powerplay and had just returned to full strength when the impressive Daniel Abercrombie collected a Juraj Senko pass on the left and somehow squeezed a shot between Dmitri Zimozdra and his near post.
Hungry for more Solway continued to press and duly took the lead two and a half minutes from the first interval when Kim Miettinen and Joe Coulter combined to allow Richard Bentham to score with a deflected shot.
After the break the Sharks continued to press and goal number three arrived in the twenty-fourth minute when Richard Bentham and James Wallace combined at centre ice to release Joe Coulter through the middle and his shot seemed to take a detour from a Sutton defender which deceived Zimozdra.
A change of tactics saw the visitors concentrate their defence in the centre which allowed Solway space and time around the boards to do pretty well as they pleased and the home sides movement and passing certainly looked impressive.
With just under three minutes remaining in the session Daniel Abercrombie collected possession on the left-hand boards and cut in along the goal-line before once more finding a chink in Zimozdra’s armour at the front post.
While there was to be no further scoring in the final period the supporters there was plenty of action to keep the supporters interested and with sharper finishing the Sharks could certainly have added a few more to their total.
At the end of the day three wins in a row to start the season and the supporters can now look forward to next weekends Northern Cup action with a home game against Blackburn Hawks and a trip to Billingham Stars.
The Man of the match awards were presented to James Goodman for Sutton and to Daniel Abercrombie for Solway.
