The BCD Solway Sharks were in eleventh heaven on Saturday evening as they moved eight points clear at the top of the NIHL North Division 1 table when their nine-one victory over the Blackburn Hawks gave them their eleventh league victory in a row.
The first period proved heavy going for the Sharks as the visitors produced a dogged rearguard battle which restricted the home side to a solitary Duncan Speirs (12:55) unassisted strike.
In the second Solway gradually gathered momentum and goals from Scott Henderson (23:25 pictured) Struan Tonnar (27:27) and Juraj Senko (28:27) gave them a comfortable margin. The Hawks were far from beaten though and their best spell of the evening saw Aaron Davies (32:04) become Blackburn’s all-time leading goal scorer when he produced a crisp finish to get the Hawks on the scoreboard. Another goal for the visitors might have produced a few nervous moments on the home bench but they raised the pace of the game once more and Duncan Speirs (36:48) and Joe Coulter (38:59) both found the net to give Solway a six-one lead at the second intermission.
In the final session the Sharks produced a professional performance and ran in three more counters through Kim Miettinen (49:20), Struan Tonnar (56:29) and Daniel Abercrombie (58:56) to leave the final score standing as Solway nine Blackburn one.
The Man of the Match Awards were presented to Stuart Ashton for the visitors and to Duncan Speirs for the home side.
