The BCD Solway Sharks returned to winning ways at the Shark Tank on Saturday evening as they extended their lead in the NIHL Moralee Conference to eight points with a three-one victory over the hard-working Deeside Dragons.
The Dragons fought a tough rear-guard battle throughout the first period but were always prepared to attack when the opportunity arose and must have thought their job was done for the first period when Struan Tonnar (19:52) netted with just eight seconds remaining in the session after good work from Ross Murray and James Hutchinson.
Marc Fowley (22:03) capped a welcome return from injury when Stevie Moore and Daniel Abercrombie combined to set him up to extend Solway’s lead to two early in the second period. The Dragons, however, fought back and deservedly reduced the deficit to one when Scott McKenzie (33:48) dispatched Markus Kankaanranta’s pass from the right-hand face-off circle.
In the final period Deeside had an excellent chance to level the scores when Ross Murray received a harsh five plus game for a knee on James Parsons but on the resulting powerplay the Sharks defended well and the visitors could only record a single shot on goal. Returning to full strength the Sharks became a danger going forward once more and Stevie Moore (54:09) neatly found the net after good build-up play from Struan Tonnar and Juraj Senko.
Due to Solway having three players away on GB Under 20’s duty Richard Thorp, Calum Blair and Tom Johnston all guested for the game from Paisley Pirates and young Kieran Hair stepped up from the Under 20’s.
Stevie Moore received the Man of the Match Award for the home side while netminder Jonah Armstrong deservedly received the award for the visitors.
