Recap

The BCD Solway Sharks returned to action at the Shark Tank on Saturday after a month away from the ice over the festive period and eventually ran out deserved winners by five goals to three.

The Sharks started the game with Chris Rae between the pipes and the netminder soon proved his worth with a tremendous double save after five minutes. Chris Rae last started a Solway fixture on 17th of December 2011 in a 24-1 rout of the Lancashire Raptors, making sixteen saves from seventeen shots faced while regular netminder Gary Russell scored five goals with two assists. The Sharks goalie could do nothing to prevent a deflected Harry Harley (19:09 PP) shot from finding the top corner of his net as the first period drew to a close.

After the break the Sharks still struggled to get their game together and Dean Holland (22:02) was on hand to double the Warriors advantage from close range. This seemed to be the spur that was needed to rouse the Sharks from their slumber and by the second interval they had scored four unanswered goals. First James Hutchinson (24:48) provided a clinical finish from the slot to get the home side on the board. The equaliser came a minute later with a powerplay pile-driver from Kim Miettinen (25:57 PP) and the Sharks took the lead when Jordan Buesa (28:26) found the perfect finish from Juraj Senko’s pass. The fourth goal in this devastating seven minute spell came when Kim Miettinen had the vision to look up in front of his own goal and see Stevie Moore (32:01) all on his own on the Whitley blueline and the Solway marksman calmly closed in on goal and slotted the puck home.

In the third period the Warriors upped their game and Anthony James Wetherell (50:40) deservedly drew the visitors to within one of the home side to set up an interesting ten minutes. A slashing minor quickly gave Solway a powerplay and Juraj Senko (51:36 PP) proved that he’s saved the best for last with a superb slapshot into the roof of the Whitley net. The visitors continued to search for a lifeline until the final hooter but with a two goal cushion the Sharks never really looked in too much danger.

Man of the Match Awards went to Harley Harley for Whitley and to James Hutchinson for Solway.
