The Sharks will lift the trophy once again if the beat Whitley Warriors at home next Saturday as they are the only team that can beat Solway’s current total of 20 points and that would be in the unlikely event they win all of their five remaining fixtures.
The outlook didn’t look too bright for the home side when Jack Emmerson (03:04) fired the visitors into an early lead with an unassisted goal in the third minute and it took Solway a little time to start firing on all cylinders. Jordan Buesa (11:16) continued his run of fine form when he converted a Ben Edmonds pass to level the scores just after the mid-way point in the opening period and returned the favour for Edmonds (17:31) to give the Sharks a slender lead going into the first intermission.
No-one in the crowd could surely have predicted the show that the Solway “Young Guns” were about to deliver as the players returned to the ice but they were soon to be fully entertained. Joe Coulter (24:48) was next on the score sheet when he converted Ross Murray’s pass before fine work from Struan Tonnar and Marc Fowley set up Daniel Abercrombie (26:52) to score his first of the night. Struan Tonnar (28:10) scored the Sharks fifth before Daniel Abercrombie (34:21 & 35:20) completed his hat trick and Jordan Buesa (36:49) rounded off an almost perfect period with the home sides eighth goal.
The final period was something of a non-event after the thrills that had gone on before. The Stars regained their composure with the ever-reliable James Flavell now between the pipes and the Sharks were content to play out the period and claim the spoils.
