The BCD Solway Sharks travelled across country on Sunday to play old rivals the Whitley Warriors and returned with another valuable point which put them just three victories away from claiming this seasons’ Moralee Conference title.
After a tough opening to the match the Sharks opened the scoring when Jordan Buesa (09:34) opened the scoring after good build up play from Ross Murray and Kim Miettinen but the home side refused to be subdued and were soon on level terms through Jordan Barnes (10:12).
Solway got off to a flyer as the second period began as Daniel Abercrombie (20:55) continued his run of fine form with a well-taken solo effort. While the home side continued to contest strongly with the league leaders it was to be Abercrombie (36:41) who doubled the Sharks advantage with another well taken goal after good work from Ross Murray and Stevie Moore.
Whitley battled hard again in the final session but it was beginning to look like Solway would be heading home with both points until Dean Holland (57:51 PP) netted on a powerplay with just over two minutes remaining. With their backs to the wall the Sharks tried desperately to hold onto their lead but Callum Watson (59:01) sent the home fans wild when he netted the equaliser a minute from time.
With Blackburn’s draw against Sutton today the only team that can still match or beat the Sharks current points total are the Billingham Stars. If the Stars were to win all their remaining matched they would total 42 points which means that the Sharks would need to collect just six more points to claim the title as we have the better head-to-head record over the Billingham. Should the Sharks beat the Blackburn Hawks home and away on 18th and 19th of February we could win the league against the Deeside Dragons at home on Saturday 25th of February.
The Man of the Match Awards were presented to Josh Maddock for the Warriors and to Ross Murray for the Sharks.
