There was little to suggest the thriller that was to come in the first period as neither team was able to dominate play or to trouble the scorers. Overall the Sharks held a slightly greater share of possession and territory which was reflected in the fact that they outshot their opponents by fifteen shots to ten.
After the first intermission the home side returned to the ice in determined fashion and it was not long before they took the lead when Kim Miettinen and Corey Stones set up Richard Bentham (21:46) to open the scoring. Solway tried their best to hit back and again outshot their opponents, this time by seventeen shots to eleven, but, try as they might, they just couldn’t find a way past Niks Trapans in the Hawks goal. As the Sharks pressed for an equaliser disaster struck when Robert Streetly fed the puck to Aaron Davies (38:40) and the Hawks sniper duly found the net to make the score two nil at the second interval.
Coach Grubb no doubt had some harsh words for his charges during the break but for the first nine minutes of the final period it didn’t look like his tactical changes were going to work but then all of a sudden things began to click. With the Sharks on a powerplay a neat interchange of passes between Connor Henderson and Marek Charvat opened up the opportunity for Jordan Buesa (49:18 PP) to find the net with a crisp shot and the comeback was on.
With their tails up Solway continued to press and four minutes later Ross Murray and Kyle Horne combined to set up Struan Tonnar (53:55) to level the scores to the delight of their travelling support. Both teams wanted the points but both netminders, Niks Trapans and Calum Hepburn, produced saves which kept their respective teams on level terms as they strove for the winner. With three minutes remaining the puck fell Solway’s way and Ross Murray and Struan Tonnar were the providers for the in-form Marek Charvat (57:06 pictured) to score his second goal of the weekend. This time it was to prove to be the match winner as the Sharks expertly closed out the game to take the points with a tremendous three-two victory.
The Man of the Match Awards were presented to Vaclav Kolarik for Solway and to Niks Trapans for Blackburn.
