The BCD Solway Sharks were on the road to North Wales on Sunday as they began the defence of their Moralee Conference title with a comprehensive thirteen-two victory over the Deeside Dragons.
In the opening exchanges there was not much to separate the teams until Solway took the lead through James Hutchinson (06:50) on a powerplay in the seventh minute. That lead lasted for just twenty-four seconds before the home side levelled the scores through James Parsons (07:14) but Connor Henderson (07:31 pictured) instantly gave the Sharks the lead once more. Play was mostly flowing one way. Scott McKenzie always looked dangerous for the home team but most of his time seemed to be spent man marking Iain Bowie. A tactic that was to fail on the night as the Sharks sniper (14:38) scored the first of his a hat-trick and his fellow forwards were given far too much space.
In the second period a lack of discipline was to be the Dragons downfall as the Sharks ran in no fewer that five powerplay goals while the home side managed a solitary reply of their own with a short-handed goal. Chief culprit fir the Dragons was to be Craig Lutkevitch who received a five plus game for a nasty check to the head from behind on Joe Coulter. This was to be a very costly penalty for the home side as the Sharks took full advantage and ran in no less than four powerplay goals during the penalty. Scorers in the second period were: Ross Murray (23:18), Connor Henderson (31:14 PP), Marek Charvat (32:24 PP), Scott Cooper (32:58 PP), Kyle Horne (33:14 PP) and Iain Bowie (39:46) while Matty Wainwright (37:51 SH) scored for Deeside.
With the game won the third period was little more than a training game in which Solway ran in four more goals without reply through Iain Bowie (43:51), Kyle Horne (55:18), Marek Charvat (57:17 PP) and Ross Murray (59:45 PP).
Kyle Horne received the Man of the Match award for the Sharks.
