Hull Pirates vs Solway Sharks

Recap

The BCD Solway Sharks made the long trip down to Hull on Sunday and returned home empty-handed on the wrong side of an extremely disappointing eleven-two scoreline.

Despite holding high hopes of causing some kind of a shock the Sharks were on the back foot from the opening puck drop and it took the home side just two and a half minutes to open the scoring through Aaron Lyon (02:24). Things continues to go from bad to worse for Solway as their defence was torn apart time after time by speed and skill of the Pirates forwards and they piled on the misery for the Sharks travelling support with three more goal before the nine minute mark through Lee Bonner (06:14 & 07:48) and James Chilcott (08:01). It is debatable whether Hull took their foot off the gas at that point or if the Sharks improved, either way that was to be the end of the scoring before the first interval.

Solway returned to the ice hoping to make more of a game of it in the second period but before they knew it they were on the back foot once more. As wave after wave of Hull attacks flowed towards the visitors goal the home side added three more goals to their tally before the second interval. For the record the Hull scorers in the second period were: Bobby Chamberlain (21:54 & 31:11) and Jason Hewitt (30:19).

The Pirates piled on more misery at the start of the final session with three more goals coming from Jordan Fisher (42:38), Matthew Davies (43:04) and Lee Bonner (44:17) to take the home sides tally into double figures. A neat wrist shot from Iain Bowie (46:14 pictured) after determined play on the left from James Hutchinson and Joe Coulter finally got the Sharks on the scoreboard and gave their followers something to cheer but it was nothing more than a shallow consolation in all honesty. Solway continued to try everything they knew to restore their dignity but they were once again fishing the puck out of their own net when Lee Bonner (52:18) scored his fourth goal of the evening and his seventh goal of the season against the Sharks. The final counter of the game did go the Sharks way when Struan Tonnar (52:18) converted Ross Murray’s pass with a powerful shot from close range but over the course of the game the Sharks always played second fiddle to a very good Hull Pirates team.

The Man of the Match Award for the Sharks was presented to Jordan Buesa while four goal Lee Bonner picked up that honour for the Pirates.
