The first period saw play flow from end to end with the home side taking a slightly greater share of possession and territory but neither team was able to dominate the other for any length of time. The fact that the Steeldogs only outshot the Sharks thirteen to ten in this period showed that they were more than prepared to attack when the opportunity arose and Kyle Horne, again deputising for the injured Calum Hepburn, proved once again that he is a more than adequate back-up netminder. Despite the best efforts of both teams the period ended with the score tied at zero.
After the first intermission the home side returned to the ice and a quick fire double proved to be the turning point in the match and one hill to many for the unlucky Sharks. Firstly Thomas Relf and Cameron Brownley combined to provide the ammunition for Milan Kolena (21:46) to stay on his feet long enough to open the scoring. The home supporters had barely returned to their seats before their delight was doubled by Cameron Brownley (22:04) was set up to make the score two-nil after a neat interchange between Lewis Bell and Thomas Relf. After this double setback Solway tried their best to get back into the game and the fact that they outshot the home side ten to nine in this period showed that play was far from one-sided.
As the fixture moved into the final period all was not lost and the game was still there to be won. To their credit the Sharks tried to take the game to their opponents at every opportunity but suffered a further setback when Timothy Smith (47:12) made the score three-nil when he converted a pinpoint pass from Adrian Palak. Solway continued to look for a lifeline and the fact that they again outshot their opponents, this time by thirteen shots to eight, was again a testament to their spirit and perseverance but unfortunately that alone was not enough to turn this fixture around.
The Man of the Match Awards were presented to Duncan Speirs for the Sharks and to netminder Brandon Stones for the Steeldogs.
