On Saturday evening a sloppy performance saw the BCD Solway Sharks throw away a two goal first period lead against defending league Champion Blackburn Hawks to eventually loose five-three in a Northern Cup fixture at the Ice Bowl.
First session goals from Ross Murray at 7:11 assisted by Scott Henderson and from Richard Bentham at 12:08 assisted by Kim Miettinen and James Wallace had the Sharks cruising with the only surprise being that it wasn’t more.
After a dressing down the Hawks came out in the second period to play a more “Hawks-like” game bullying the Solway players all over the ice. With the home sides rhythm totally blown away Blackburn netted twice at 28:33 on a powerplay and again at 32:06. Jordan Buesa, on his debut for the Sharks, fired the home team ahead again at 37:46 assisted by Ben Edmonds and James Hutchinson.
Into the final period and three-two ahead the Sharks threw all they had at the Hawks but despite outshooting them at nineteen-eight it was the visitors that found the goals at 47:14 and again on a powerplay at 52:47 to take a four-three lead into the closing minutes. With time running out the Sharks opted for an extra skater as they pulled their netminder but pain the penalty when they lost possession and the visitors scored with an empty net goal at 59:39. Blackburn’s five-three win was an object lesson in finishing on what was not a good night at all for the Sharks.
