The BCD Solway Sharks will play the Billingham Stars on Sunday afternoon in the NIHL (North) Moralee Conference Play-Off Final courtesy of a Duncan Speirs goal sixty-five seconds into sudden death overtime.
Solway got off to a slow start against a hard-working Solihull Barons side who fought for every loose puck. Overall the Sharks edged possession and territory but fell behind to a Josh Bruce (17:44) strike as the first interval approached. Less than a minute later the scores were level when Stevie Moore and Connor Henderson combined to allow Kim Miettinen (18:42) to fire home from distance.
The Barons retook the lead after jus thirty-three seconds of the second period thanks to Andrew Whitehouse (20:33) and despite the best efforts of both side that remained the score-line at the second intermission.
As the final session progressed Solihull put up a dogged resistance to repel the ever increasing Sharks pressure and netminder Josh Nicholls made a string of excellent saves. It took a piece of individual skill from Struan Tonnar (47:34) to level the score at two with a fine unassisted goal with what was to be the final score of regulation time.
Three-on-three overtime then followed and with the Sharks on the attack Duncan Speirs (61:05) slipped his marker to convert the winning goal after being set up by James Hutchinson and Joe Coulter.
The Man of the Match Awards were presented to Josh Nicholls for Solihull and to James Hutchinson for the Sharks was presented to Stevie Moore.
