The BCD Solway Sharks continued their winning start to the season with a hard-fought three-one Division 1 North (Moralee) victory over old rivals the Whitley Warriors at the Shark Tank on Saturday evening.
There was a festive atmosphere at the rink to celebrate the Ice Bowls’ 25th Anniversary and the large crowd certainly appreciated free entry courtesy of D&G Council. Spirits rose even higher when the Sharks took a seventh minute lead through Iain Bowie (06:32) when he converted the rebound after Turnbull had blocked Stevie Moore’s wrap-around effort. While there was to be no more goals in the period the supporters were treated to a feast of attacking hockey from both sides.
Two minutes into the second period ace marksman Iain Bowie turned provider as his perfectly weighted pass found Marek Charvat (22:07) in space and the Czech D-man made no mistake as he dispatched the puck into the Whitley net for goal number two. The Warriors were far from content to play second fiddle to the Sharks and their effort were rewarded when Philip Edgar (30:46) netted expertly to reduce the deficit to one. A minute later, however, Solway regained their two goal advantage when that man Bowie (31:46) found the net once more after good work from Ross Murray and Joe Coulter.
While this might have been the end of the scoring there was no lack of effort from both sides and netminders Mark Turnbull and Calum Hepburn each made some excellent saves. Solway fans were eager to see new import signing Vaclav (Vas) Kolarik (pictured) who showed signs that he will fit in well at the Shark Tank and, while he may be more of a stay-at-home D-man, he proved that he has quite a slapshot from the blueline.
