Sharks keep momentum rolling with Telford victory

The BCD Solway Sharks kept their momentum moving forward as they head towards next month’s NIHL Play-Off’s with a four-two victory over the Telford Tigers at the Shark Tank on Saturday evening.

The supporters had barely taken their seats after the national anthem when Joe Coulter (00:15) converted the rebound from Duncan Speirs shot from close range to give Solway the perfect start to the game (second assist to Marc Fowley). Overall the home side had a slightly greater share of possession and territory but the struggling Tigers fought all the way and matched the Sharks at twelve apiece in first period shots on goal. With that in mind they could feel a little hard done by when Connor Henderson (14:13) scored Solway’s second goal from the right-hand boards after patient build-up play from Kim Miettinen and Stuart Andrews.

After the first interval the Tigers tried to take the game to the home side but gradually the tide began to turn and a crisp shot from Daniel Abercrombie (29:03 PP above) resulted in a powerplay goal with assists going to Kim Miettinen and Stevie Moore. The Sharks pressure continued and two minutes later Joe Coulter and Marc Fowley combined well to set up Duncan Speirs (31:03) to net a deserved fourth goal.

While Solway began the final period four goals to nil ahead the game was still pretty even overall and Telford certainly didn’t feel like a defeated side and ninety-six seconds into the session they got the lifeline they deserved when a flowing attack along the right wing created space at the back post for Luke Brittle to score from close range. Heartened by this Telford continue to press Calum Hepburn’s goal and the Sharks keeper had to make a number of good saves to keep the visitor’s at bay. Hepburn could, however, do nothing to prevent the Tigers second goal.

A lightning fast break from defence saw Luke Brittle’s pass loop unfortunately off Juraj Senko’s skate perfectly into the path of Callum Bowley (49:46) and the Telford man showed a cool head to pick his spot and score in the top right-hand corner of the net. Solway wisely killed the pace of the game at this point and the visitors frustration quickly turned into indiscipline and penalties which stopped their momentum and ultimately their chance to rescue a point from the game.

The Man of the Match Awards were presented to Daniel Harrison for the Tigers and to Connor Henderson for the Sharks.
