Slovakian winger Peter Gapa is Martin Grubb’s first import signing for the 18/19 NIHL season for the Building Craftsmen Dumfries-sponsored Solway Sharks.
The 25-year-old came through his hometown club Poprad’s development system right up to the Slovak top level Liga before spending his last two seasons in Sweden and Finland respectively.…
In the 17/18 season, Gapa played in Finnish third tier, Suomi-Sarja, with Hokki and scored 31 points (11+20) in 35 games.
Gapa has also represented Slovakia at three Student Winter Games (Universiade) with 23 points in 18 tournament games (11+12).
Sharks head coach Martin Grubb said: “We are excited to be able to bring Peter to the club and look forward to him arriving in Dumfries next month.
“When we spoke to his agent and Peter himself it was clear he sees this as an exciting opportunity and wanted to be part of our team so that made things easy.
“He skates well, has speed and skill and certainly knows where the net is and I am looking forward to seeing the impact he can have in our team.
“I am sure he will fit into the team well and give us more options offensively. Hopefully he will get off to a good start and I’m confident he will do a good job for us.”
From his side, Peter Gapa said: “I was sent an interesting offer from the U.K. and it was from Solway Sharks.
“I considered it as a good opportunity for me and after talking to coach Martin Grubb I am very excited to be a part of the team next season!
“I love hockey. I am a forward who likes to win games. Hockey is a very fast game and I like to score goals and make points but it doesn’t matter who scores or makes points, I want to play my best for the team in the first place!
“I have some experience with playing abroad and I hope that these experiences will help me also in the U.K.
“My aim is to play the best as I can in each game and help the team win. I hope we can make the playoffs and our main aim is to make the top three and try and win the championship.
“I look forward to getting over and meeting my new team mates and supporters and I hope that they will support us in every game, and be our sixth player. I am already looking forward to the season with the Solway Sharks.”
